Ways to Wear a Shawl

Shawls are fashion accessories that add instant class to outfits and help keep you warm on breezy fall or winter days. Shawls can also take away the chill on cool summer evenings. Delicate lace shawls coordinate well with dresses. Heavier shawls are more appropriate to wear with casual clothing. There are several ways you can wear a shawl to create different looks.

The first is poncho. The poncho is the classic style that most people think of when they hear the word “shawl.” It’s easy and works with shawls of all varieties. Fold the shawl into a triangle. Wrap it around your neck and tie it loosely in front. Pin the ends with a pretty brooch to hold it in place.

The second is evening wrap. Place the shawl around your shoulders and let the ends delicately dangle down. This look works best with light or lace shawls. It’s a suitable style for sleeveless tops or strapless dresses that you can wear to formal events.

The third is hood. If you’re worried about getting caught in the rain or snow, fashion your shawl into a hood. Drape it around your head, and then crisscross the ends over your shoulders to keep it in place. Your head will stay dry and you’ll look fashionable at the same time.

The forth is ascot tie. Fold the shawl in half lengthwise. Place the scarf around your neck and then place the loose ends through the loop. Let the ends hang loose for an elegant, European style.

The fifth is sarong. Although it is most common to wear a shawl around your neck or on your shoulders, that’s not the only way it can accent your wardrobe. Tying the shawl as a sarong makes a stylish beach cover-up. You’ll need a larger shawl to create this style. Fold the wrap diagonally, creating a triangle. Then wrap it around your hips to cover the bottom of a bathing suit. Tie it at the side of your hip.

The last is belt. A small shawl can easily be transformed into a belt by gathering the shawl lengthwise and either cinching it around your waist or inserting it into each of your belt loops and tying it at the front. You can tuck the ends back through the belt loops or let them hang loose for a casual look.
