Washing and Preserving Methods for Silk Scarves

As a beautiful and elegant accessory for any wardrobe, silk scarves are seen on people's neck frequently while walking on the streets, having a party or getting together any time of the year.

Silk scarves can be used in many ways. They are wonderful gifts. You can buy one for anyone you care about including yourself. And as a fashionable accessory, they can keep you warm and cool. They can be tied around your neck, your head and even your waist to make a different look. Usually, silk scarves are expensive so it is very important to adopt right methods to wash them.

First, you can take silk scarves to a professional dry cleaner if you want. But it is better to wash them by hands because silk is a kind of protein fiber which alkali resistance is weak. Therefore it is suggested to use gentle detergent to wash. In the meantime, the temperature of the water should be controlled under 30 degree. Otherwise, the silk scarves can be easily to fade, discolor.

Second, add a few drops of vinegar in the clean water and soak the silk scarves in the mixture completely for a few minutes, which is helpful to keep scarves bright in color.

Third, squeeze out the excess water and rinse the scarves with cold water until the soap is washed out.

Forth, after the silk scarves are cleaned, lay them flat on a towel and put them in a cool place to completely dry. No wring or twist.

Fifth, if it is a crinkle scarf, you can just twist it to make a knot to dry. No ironing and pressing. And remember not to lay it flat to dry.

Knowing the right washing methods is not enough to keep silk scarves in good shape, having a good knowledge of preserving them is also a key.

The best way to store silk scarves is by hanging them in the closet or using rounded hooks,which helps minimize any wrinkles and snags on the scarves. You can also fold them and store in breathable containers or linen boxers. And it is suggested to organize the silk scarves by color so that it will be very convenient to pick one to wear.

Furthermore, you should try to avoid any contact with makeup or moisture, and remove your scarves before eating.

For women, silk scarves are a valuable, diverse and personal accessory to complement their outfits. They are quite delicate, and must be cleaned and stored properly to ensure a long shelf life.
